In this inspiring talk, Satish Kumar will share the philosophy behind his widely recognised framework “Soil, Soul, Society,” a powerful idea that explores the deep connections between ecological health, human values, and the wellbeing of our communities. His work has inspired generations of environmental thinkers, educators and activists, offering a hopeful vision for how humanity can live in greater harmony with the Earth.

Now in his tenth decade, Satish Kumar continues to travel, teach and speak around the world, sharing his message of ecological wisdom, peace and spiritual values. His lifelong work has helped shape global conversations around sustainability, education and the future of our planet.

The evening also comes in a milestone year for Resurgence & Ecologist, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2026. The magazine has been a leading voice for ecological thinking and cultural renewal for six decades, with Satish Kumar serving as its influential editor for many years.

Presented by the Memnosyne Institute and hosted by the Memnosyne UK Chapter, the event will bring together thinkers, artists, environmentalists and changemakers for an evening of reflection and conversation about how we can cultivate a more compassionate and sustainable future.

Satish Kumar was born in Rajasthan, India, and became a Jain monk at the age of nine. In 1962 he embarked on a remarkable 8,000-mile peace pilgrimage from India to the nuclear capitals of the world — walking without money and relying entirely on the kindness of strangers. Today he is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in the global ecological movement and helped establish Schumacher College, a pioneering centre for ecological learning.

London, UK — March 2026 — Internationally acclaimed South Sudanese musician, peace ambassador and activist Emmanuel Jal will appear in London for a special evening of live music and conversation hosted by the Memnosyne UK Chapter Speaker Series.

Taking place on Thursday 26 March 2026 at The Chapel, Marylebone, the event will offer audiences a rare opportunity to experience Emmanuel Jal in an intimate setting — combining a live performance with a conversation about his extraordinary life journey and the role of music in inspiring peace and social change.

Born in South Sudan, Jal’s early childhood was shaped by the country’s civil war, where he was forced into life as a child soldier before eventually escaping and rebuilding his life in Kenya. Today he is recognised worldwide as a musician, author, actor and humanitarian whose work has transformed the lives of millions.

Over a career spanning more than two decades, Jal has earned global acclaim for his distinctive fusion of hip-hop, Afro-pop and Afrohouse, rooted in his South Sudanese heritage and driven by messages of unity, resilience and hope. His music has taken him to some of the world’s most iconic stages including Live 8, Glastonbury Festival, Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Concert and performances for His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

He has also collaborated with internationally renowned artists including Lauryn Hill, Peter Gabriel, Nelly Furtado, Joss Stone, Ed Sheeran, Nile Rodgers and Alicia Keys, and has released seven award-nominated studio albums, earning two Juno Award nominations for Best International Album.

The evening will open with a fireside conversation between Emmanuel Jal and Mary Ann Thompson-Frenk, co-founder of the Memnosyne Institute, exploring Jal’s journey from war to global stages and the ways music and collaboration can support communities affected by conflict.

They will also discuss the African Breadbasket Project, a developing initiative created through collaboration between GUA Africa and the Memnosyne UK Chapter, designed to support Sudanese refugee families and local communities in East Africa through sustainable agricultural enterprises.

Following the conversation, Emmanuel Jal will take to the stage for a live musical performance, bringing his powerful storytelling and signature Afro-influenced sound to London audiences.

Emmanuel Jal is a South Sudanese rapper, singer, actor, activist and public speaker whose work promotes peace, reconciliation and education through music and humanitarian initiatives. Mayan Community Brings Sacred Blessing, Art, and Ancestral
Knowledge to the Royal Society of Arts

The Memnosyne UK Chapter will host a sacred cultural gathering at the Royal Society of
Arts (RSA) on Monday 9 February 2026, welcoming members of the U kúuchil K
Ch’i’ibalo’on Community Center, a Mayan cultural organisation based in the Yucatán
Peninsula of Mexico.

The visiting delegation — comprising community elders, artists, and cultural guardians,
both women and men — is part of a European tour running from 22 January to 12
February 2026, with visits to Spain, Germany, Sweden, and the UK. Across the tour, the
community is sharing Mayan art, worldview, and community-led practices rooted in
ancestral knowledge, land stewardship, and cultural continuity.

U kúuchil K Ch’i’ibalo’on Community Center is based in the central region of Quintana Roo,
within the Mayan Masewal zone, and is part of the wider Memnosyne Institute network,
as well as a member of the Remain on Earth alliance.

As part of their London visit, the community will offer a traditional Mayan blessing for the
Memnosyne Institute at the RSA, honouring ancestral wisdom, Earth-based knowledge
systems, and the collective responsibility of communities to protect culture, land, and future
generations. The gathering will also include the sharing of artistic and cultural works,
offering insight into the stories, symbolism, and lived realities they represent.

Throughout their European journey, members of the community are engaging with
universities, museums, and cultural centres, participating in forums, talks, exhibitions,
and reflective dialogues addressing Indigenous knowledge systems, lived experience, and
the ongoing impacts of discrimination and structural inequality within global political and
economic systems.

During the tour, the Maya Community Center is also presenting the photographic exhibition
“Reflections”, marking its tenth anniversary. This powerful collection explores the deep
and enduring relationship between Maya women and their land, expressed through image,
memory, and lived experience.

The London gathering will take place in the Prince Philip Room at the Royal Society of Arts
and will include light refreshments.
